In a stunning turn of events, the first wave of NFL free agency turned into an open trade market that saw a massive shake-up, as multiple high-profile players, including offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Geno Smith, and star wide receiver DK Metcalf, found new homes in the last 48 hours.
Breaking Down the Trades
Though full details of the trade are still emerging, here’s a breakdown of the major player movements:
Laremy Tunsil
The Pro Bowl left tackle, long considered one of the best pass protectors in the game, was traded from the Houston Texans to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a 3rd and 7th rounder in 2025 and a 2nd and 4th rounder in 2026.
Kenny Pickett
The Philadelphia Eagles’ young quarterback, who had a reset year as the team’s backup to Jalen Hurts, is on the move. Pickett never quite solidified himself as the franchise quarterback in Pittsburgh, leading to speculation about his future. He goes to the Cleveland Browns for a 5th-round pick in 2025 and Browns’ backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
Pickett will have a chance to start for the Browns, but Cleveland may also address the position of quarterback in the draft at #2 overall pick or with the first pick in the 2nd round to start day two.
Geno Smith
The Seattle Seahawks’ veteran quarterback, who revived his career over the past two seasons, was also included in a blockbuster trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. Reuniting with former Head Coach Pete Carroll, Smith will hopefully solve the Raider’s’ long-term issue at the quarterback position. In return, the Seahawks received the Raiders’ 3rd round pick and used the extra cap space to sign Sam Darnold to a three-year deal.
DK Metcalf
Perhaps the biggest name of all four trades, Metcalf is one of the most physically dominant wide receivers in the NFL. His departure from Seattle is a shock, as he was seen as a foundational piece of their offense. For Metcalf, the Seahawks received the Pittsburgh Steeler’s’ 2nd round pick in 2025.
The Steelers now pair Metcalf with emergent WR George Pickens who are sure to make one of the most dangerous and physical tandems in the league.
What’s Next?
With the NFL Draft approaching, these trades will undoubtedly have ripple effects across the league. Teams that missed out on acquiring a quarterback or a top-tier offensive weapon will now need to look to day two of free agency and beyond (or the draft) to fill those needs.
