Smith attended Palm Beach Central High School in Florida. He hit .435 with 18 extra-base hits and 32 RBI during senior season and was First Team All-American his final two years of high school. He was ranked the No. 1 shortstop in Florida and No. 53 overall prospect nationally by Perfect Game. He chose to join Florida State following his high school career.
As a freshman, Smith slashed .258/.326/.517 (average, on base %, slugging) with 12 home runs, 8 doubles, and 5 triples, while driving in 36 RBI in 51 games. He was a member of the All-ACC Freshman Team.
This year is Smith's sophomore year. He is expected to take a massive step forward this season and bring himself into possible first round conversation.
