Jalen Royals grew up in Powder Springs, Georgia and attended Hillgrove High School where he lettered in football, basketball and track and field. Royals hauled in 26 catches for 455 yards and four touchdowns during his senior season but was not heavily recruited and committed to play football at Georgia Military College.
During his true freshman season at Georgia Military, Royals had seven catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games. After the season was finished, he decided to transfer to Utah State. In 2022, Royals played in 12 games sparingly, although he did make one start but did not record any stats during the season.
Royals had his breakout season in 2023, playing in 13 games and hauling in a team leading 71 receptions for 1,080 yards and a conference leading 15 touchdowns. He was selected as a First-Team All-Mountain West for his accomplishments and put himself on the scouts radar for 2024.
