Matvei Gridin was born in Kurgan, Russia and in 2021-2022 Gridin played for the Avangard Omsk U17 team in Russia. He produced at over a point a game scoring 50 points in 34 games.
Gridin was selected by the Muskegon Lumberjacks during the 2022 USHL Phase II Draft. In his first year in the USHL during the 2022-2023 season, Gridin appeared in 40 games for the Jacks where he recorded 8 goals and 11 assists. This past season, Gridin took off and showed not only his goal scoring ability but also his creativity. He played in 60 games and tallied 38 goals and 45 assists, while adding another 5 points in 8 playoff games.
Gridin is committed to playing NCAA hockey in 2024-2025 for the University of Michigan.
