Tez Johnson was born in Birmingham, Alabama. When Johnson was an infant his father died by suicide and at age 15, he was adopted by the family of quarterback Bo Nix, whose father Pat was his high school coach at Pinson Valley High School. Johnson was a three-year starter in high school, playing alongside of Bo Nix becoming a first-team all-state selection. As a junior when he caught 106 receptions for 1,457 yards and 10 touchdowns. He caught 62 passes for 1,140 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior while being invited to the Albama-Mississippi All-Star Game and was ranked a three-star recruit and the 39th best player in the state by ESPN. The senior chose to play football for the Troy Trojans.
As a true freshman, Johnson played 11 games at Troy and totaled 18 receptions for 211 yards. The following season, Johnson was the leading receiver with 67 catches for 735 yards and four touchdowns, being named third-team All-Sun Belt Conference. He remained Troy's top receiver in 2022, being named honorable mention all-conference while totaling 56 receptions for 863 yards and four scores.
Johnson entered the transfer portal following the 2022 season, and ultimately transferred to the Oregon Ducks, joining his adoptive brother Bo Nix, the team's starting quarterback. In his first season at Oregon, Johnson started 13 of the 14 games and hauled in an Oregon record 86 passes for 1,182 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named Associated Press All-Pac-12 second team.
In 2024, Johnson missed a couple of games early in the year, but heading into the College Football Playoffs, he has started 11 games and snared 78 passes for 866 yards and 10 touchdowns.
