Tyler Kolek grew up in Cumberland, Rhode Island and initially attended Cumberland High School. He spent three years at Cumberland before transferring to St. George's School prior to the start of his senior year. Kolek was named the Rhode Island Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year as a junior after averaging 18.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. He committed to George Mason over offers from Elon, Northeastern, Holy Cross and Vermont.
As a freshman, he stepped right into the George Mason starting lineup and was spectacular. He was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year after averaging 10.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. Following the end of the season, Kolek entered the NCAA transfer portal after head coach Dave Paulsen was fired at George Mason. Kolek ultimately transferred to Marquette.
Kolek picked right up where he left off at George Mason. He started all 32 games and averaged 6.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.9 assists for the Golden Eagles. He was named the Big East Player of the Year in 2023 after averaging 12.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game. Kolek was also named the Big East Tournament's Most Outstanding Player in 2023 after averaging 18.7 points per contest.
This past season, Kolek set career highs in points (15.3), rebounds (4.8) and assists (7.9) His 7.9 assists led the nation. Following the season, he announced he was going to enter the NBA Draft.
