He was ranked the No. 1 shortstop in Florida and No. 53 overall prospect nationally by Perfect Game. He chose to join Florida State following his high school career.
As a freshman, Smith slashed .258/.326/.517 (average, on base %, slugging) with 12 home runs, 8 doubles, and 5 triples, while driving in 36 RBI in 51 games. He was a member of the All-ACC Freshman Team.
This season Smith has punctuated his first round talents by hitting .397 and hitting 14 homers and 50 RBI.
Strengths
Smith obviously has great size and a solid frame, but he is also very athletic and twitchy both as a defender and a runner which is impressive for his size. Defensively, he has soft hands and a strong throwing arm which will help him stay at third base long term as a pro. At the plate, he has high end bat speed and barrel control, with above average ability in both contact rate and slugging. His well rounded offensive game has been his calling card so far through college.
Weaknesses
Smith's approach at the plate is aggressive, which can be a good thing or a bad thing at times. He tends to expand the zone a bit, chasing pitches and increasing his strikeout rate. He will likely have to refine his approach and be more selective as he transitions to the next level.
Cam Smith is an impressive third base prospect with great size and a strong arm. He is very athletic for his size which bodes well for him in the field an on the basepaths. His offensive prowess has had scouts' heads turning since his freshman year. He has definite 30-home run upside as he improves his game, and will climb draft boards if he continues to hit the way he has recently.
