Today’s Spotlight - East Carolina, Starting Pitcher, Trey Yesavage
Name- Trey Yesavage
Pos- SP
Team- East Carolina
HT/WT- 6’4” 225 lbs
Born- 7/28/2003
Home – Pottstown, PA
Yesavage attended Boyertown Area High School in Pennsylvania. As a senior, he held a 0.97 ERA and struck out 83 batters over 50.2 innings in his 10 games pitched. He was listed as the fifth-best right-hander and ninth overall prospect in Pennsylvania by Perfect Game, and chose to join East Carolina following his high school career.
Yesavage pitched out of the bullpen as a freshman, making 34 appearances on the year. He had a 4.50 ERA over 26.0 innings pitched, and collected 45 strikeouts and 19 walks. He also notched 2 saves on the year.
Yesavage became a starter in his sophomore year with the Pirates, making 16 appearances and 14 starts. He exceeded expectations, posting a 2.61 ERA and a 7-1 record on the mound with 105 strikeouts and 23 walks in 76.0 innings. He was the conference leader in opposing batting average with a .198 average, and earned All-American Athletic Conference First Team, and Baseball America, D1Baseball, NCBWA and Perfect Game Second Team All-America Selections.
This year is Yesavage's junior season with the Pirates, and he is off to a blazing start to the season.
Strengths
Yesavage's delivery is consistent as can be, and allows him to perform just as consistently. He has great command of all of his pitches, and throws all of them for strikes. His slider and splitter are his best offspeed options, and he tunnels them well off of his fastball. He may only throw his fastball in the mid-90's, but his intimidating size and frame make the fastball quicker than it seems. This makes hitters late despite the only slightly above average velocity.
Weaknesses
Yesavage's pitch mix is decent, but his slider and curveball are very similar pitches, both having 2-plane movement and similar velocities. However, the splitter pairs well with these two other pitches and keeps hitters off balance. He will likely be asked to improve his spin rates somehow in his transition to pro ball, which will allow for more difference between the slider and curveball, basically adding another pitch to his arsenal.
Yesavage is an intimidating righty with a fastball which sits mostly from 93-95 mph, but has been seen up to 98 in games. He pairs this fastball with a good slider with two-plane movement to his glove side. He also throws a curveball which is similar to the slider as both move over two planes and sit around 83-85 mph. He has newly discovered his splitter over the past few months which has served him well and is on its way to becoming one of his best pitches. He tunnels the splitter and slider off of his fastball to give hitters three different looks, gathering strikeouts and swings and misses in bulk. Yesavage should be a first round pitcher this season with potential to be a very solid middle to upper rotation starter in the MLB with his consistency and willingness to throw tons of strikes with all of his pitches.
