Johnson was born in Greenville, Mississippi, where he attended St. Joseph High School. In his high school career, Johnson would throw for 957 yards and 12 touchdowns, while also rushing for 4,287 yards and 54 touchdowns. He was a 4-star recruit and decided to play at Mississippi State.
In his three seasons with Mississippi State, Johnson was mainly use as a rotational back, sharing time with others on the roster. He rushed for 225, 485, and 488 yards in his three seasons with the Bulldogs before entering the transfer portal.
Out of the portal, Johnson chose to attend Washington where he was thrust into a workhorse role with the Huskies. He broke out, becoming a star in 2023. He rushed 233 times for 1,195 yards, also recorded 24 receptions for 190 yards.
