Newell grew up in Athens, Georgia before his family moved to Destin, Florida when he was ten years old. He initially attended Choctawatchee High School in Fort Walton Beach, Florida and as a sophomore, Newell averaged 14.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game and was named the area Player of the Year by Northwest Florida Daily News.
Prior to the start of his junior year, Newell transferred to Montverde Academy. All together between Choctawhatchee and Montverde Acadmy, Newell played in 106 games and averaed 9.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest.
He was selected to play for the 2022 U17 FIBA World Cup, the 2023 U19 FIBA World Cup and the 2024 Nike Hoop Summit and was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the top players in the 2024 class. He committed to play basketball at Georgia over offers from Texas, Alabama and Gonzaga.
