Mathis attended Harris County High School in Georgia. He was a four-time letter winner and a two way player. He batted .450 with 27 RBI and held a 3.11 ERA in 36 innings as a senior. Following his high school career, Mathis decided to join College of Charleston.
As a freshman, Mathis struggled at the plate, slashing .188/.316/.438 (average, on base %, slugging). He played just 25 games and started 4. He also pitched out of the bullpen, making 20 appearances and holding a 3.83 ERA with 39 strikeouts and 13 walks in 40.0 innings.
As a sophomore, Mathis became a starter, playing 56 games with 55 starts. In his drastically improved playing time, he slashed .330/.439/.575 with 7 home runs, 11 doubles, and 51 RBI. On the mound, he made 14 appearances including 10 starts. His ERA improved slightly from his freshman season as he ended up with a 3.45 ERA with 52 strikeouts and 17 walks in 60.0 innings. He earned All-CAA Second Team and NCBWA Second Team All-American selections.
This year is Mathis' junior season. He is expected to take another step forward at the plate as he grows into his frame.
