Darien Porter attended Bettendorf High School in Iowa, where he played wide receiver and cornerback. As a senior, he had 27 receptions for 440 yards and seven touchdowns. He also ran track in high school and broke the Iowa Class 4A state 400 meter record with a 46.99.Porter was rated a three-star recruit and committed to Iowa State over offers from Nebraska, Penn State and Minnesota.
Porter played wide receiver his first three seasons at Iowa State, but only on special teams. He collected eight total tackles on special teams between 2019-2021. In 2022, Porter was moved to defensive back and played in all 12 games during the season when he had 15 tackles and one pass deflection in his first full season at cornerback. In 2023, Porter's fifth year of collegiate ball, he played in 12 games and totaled 10 tackles between cornerback and special teams.
Using his Covid-19 season, Porter decided to come back for a sixth season to Iowa State.
