Dylan Sampson attended Dutchtown High School in Louisiana, where he surpassed Eddie Lacy to become the school's all-time leading rusher with 4,927 yards. As a junior, he ran for 1,327 yards and 15 touchdowns in eight games and followed that up as a senior by rushing for 1,374 yards and 22 touchdowns. Sampson was also a standout on the track as well, timed at 10.48 seconds in the 100, 21.16 in the 200 and 4.32 in the 40-yard dash. A four-star recruit, Sampson committed to play college football at the University of Tennessee over offers from Arkansas, Mississippi State, LSU and Penn State.
As a freshman, Sampson was a third-string running back who displayed big-play ability, totaling 397 yards on 58 carries with six touchdowns. He had a terrific all-purpose season as a sophomore, playing in 12 games with one start at running back and ranked second on the team with 604 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns. He also added 17 receptions for 175 yards and one touchdown grab.
