Grey Zabel attended T.F. Riggs High School in Pierre, South Dakota where he played both offensive and defensive line for the high school football team. Zabel finished his prep career with 84 tackles, 25 TFL, and 14 sacks while also playing on the basketball and baseball teams in high school. Zabel committed to North Dakota State to play football in 2020.
In 2020, he played five games in the spring season, starting three games at right guard. In his sophomore season, Zabel played in 11 of 15 games as a backup offensive lineman and was part of a line that ranked No. 2 in the FCS with 280.6 rushing yards per game. Zabel's versatility stood out in the 2022 campaign when he played in all 15 games and made seven starts, beginning the season at left guard and ending the season at right tackle for the Bison. In 2023, the 6-foot-6 tackle started all 15 games on the offensive line, the first three at left guard before switching positions with Mason Miller and moving to right tackle for the remainder of the season.
