Jonas Sanker attended The Covenant School in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he played running back, quarterback and safety during his high school career. He did not get to compete in his senior year due to Covid-19 but in his junior season he threw for 1,590 yards and 33 touchdowns and rushed for 1,116 yards and scored 24 touchdowns. He was also an outstanding guard on the basketball team and helped lead the team to its first seminfinal appearance during 2020 VISAA Division III tournament. Sanker was rated a three-star recruit and originally committed to Boston College. However, he de-committed and decided to attend the University of Virginia.
As a freshman, he appeared in nine games and collected five tackles in limited action. Sanker started the first nine games of the 2022 season, all together playing in 10, and finished second on the team with 63 tackles and one interception. He had a huge junior season for the Cavaliers, starting all 12 games and led the team in tackles with 107, pass breakups with 11, and forced fumbles with three. After the season he was names First Team All-ACC at safety.
