Kaleb Johnson attended Hamilton High School in Ohio, and was a three-star recruit and the 36th overall running back in the class of 2022. Johnson held offers from schools such as California, Michigan, Pitt and Iowa amongst many others. Initially, Johnson committed to play football for the California Golden Bears, but flipped his commitment to play for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
As a pure freshman in 2022, Johnson had 779 yards rushing on 151 attempts and six touchdowns. He started six games and played in 13 and was named an honorable mention Freshman All-America by College Football News. Entering the 2023 season, Johnson was a preseason third-team All-Big Ten kick returner by Phil Steele, and a Doak Walker preseason candidate. He started at running back five games, playing in 10 and rushed for 463 yards on 117 attempts and three touchdowns.
Johnson has put himself on the map as a potential top running back in the 2025 NFL Draft, with his big start in 2024.
