Maxwell Hairston was born in West Bloomfield, Michigan where he attended West Bloomfield High School. In Hairston's senior year he recorded 16 pass deflections, three interceptions and three forced fumbles and was rated a three-star prospect. He committed to the University of Kentucky over other schools such as Kansas, Minnesota, Purdue, Virginia Tech, and Washington State.
After redshirting in 2021, Hairston played in 12 games and totaled two tackles while playing mostly on special teams. In 2023, Hairston started all 13 games and ranked fifth nationally with five interceptions. The redshirt sophomore also collected 68 tackles and returned two of his five interceptions for touchdowns. At the end of the season, Hairston was selected as a Second Team All-SEC and announced he was coming back to Lexington for another season.
