Mello Dotson attended Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he played cornerback and was rated a three-star prospect by ESPN. In his senior season, he collected 46 tackles and five interceptions, committing to the University of Kansas.
Dotson played just three games in a limited role during his true freshman season and totaled two tackles but started eight games while playing in all 12 in 2021. He made 24 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery on the season. He finished second on the team in interceptions (2), pass breakups (6) while also totaling 54 tackles in his redshirt sophomore season.
In 2023, the Jayhawks corner was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention after tallying 48 tackles, four interceptions, one sack and 11 passes defended. He showed off his playmaking ability by returning two of the interceptions for touchdowns in 2023.
