Sebastian Castro attended Harold L. Richards High School in Oak Lawn, Illinois and was a defensive back and a quarterback, notching 95 total tackles, with 6.5 tackles for a loss, and six interceptions on defense, while throwing for 421 yards and rushing for another 1,145 yards with 30 total touchdowns. He was a three-star recruit and committed to the University of Iowa.
In 2019, Castro redshirted and did not appear in any games. In 2020, Castro played in one game during the shortened COVID-19 season. He saw his playing time increase slightly in 2021, playing in 13 games in a reserve and special teams role and tallied six tackles. In 2022, Castro saw action in all 13 games while starting eight and he recorded 33 tackles, three tackles for a loss and one sack. One of his eight starts was at outside linebacker.
2023 was a breakout season for Castro. He was named a first-team All-American by Pro Football focus after starting 13 of the 14 games and tallying 67 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, three interceptions, one sack and eight passes defended.
