After the season he entered the transfer portal and elected to play football at Texas State in the Sun Belt Conference.

He continued his solid play in 2022, starting all 12 games and once again was credited with just 1 sack and 7 pressures given up during the campaign. After the season, Hergel entered the transfer portal and this time decided to play his last season at Boston College.
As a 5th-year senior Hergel saw action in 12 games at left guard and played a total of 868 snaps for the Eagles. He allowed just 2 quarterback hurries, 2 quarterback hits and 0 sacks.
