Spencer Rattler was a five-star recruit out of Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, AZ. Rattler was the consensus #1 quarterback in the 2019 class after throwing for an Arizona State record 11,083 yards with 116 passing touchdowns and also running for over 1,000 yards in his career with 14 rushing touchdowns. Rattler had his choice of schools and committed to Oklahoma.
In 2019 as a freshman, Rattler saw action in 3 games, completing 7 of 11 passes on the year. As a redshirt freshman in 2020, he broke onto the scene, being named first-team AP All-Big 12 selection and a freshman All-American. (The only 2nd Oklahoma quarterback to receive this award. The other was Sam Bradford.) He led Oklahoma to a 9-2 record during the Covid-19 season, throwing for 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Rattler’s draft stock was overhyped heading into the 2021 season, being mentioned as a potential first overall pick by some outlets. But after starting the first 6 games of the season, Rattler lost his job to freshman Caleb Williams. After the season, he announced he was entering the transfer portal and took his services to South Carolina where he would start.
Rattler led the Gamecocks to an 8-5 record last season and threw for 3,026 yards and 18 touchdowns. Though, he remained inconsistent throughout the season, throwing 12 interceptions.
South Carolina had a rough season in 2023 going 5-7, though Rattler did his part to keep the offense producing. In 12 games he passed for 3,186 yards and 19 touchdowns. He did have some bouts of bad decisions and threw 8 interceptions for the Gamecocks.
