Derrick Harmon attended Loyola High School in Detroit, Michigan. He was rated a three-star recruit, the 59th defensive tackle, and the 1,077th best player in the class of 2021. Harmon also held offers from schools such as Alabama A&M, Ball State, Central Michigan, Memphis, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Purdue, and Southern Mississippi. Ultimately, Harmon decided to commit to play college football for the Michigan State Spartans.
Harmon played in four games to preserve his redshirt season, totaling 36 snaps. He was part of the rotation on the defensive line in year two, and played in 12 games making five starts, where he tallied 30 tackles and two sacks. In 2023, Harmon played in all 12 games, making 10 starts and recorded a career-high 40 tackles, the most among Michigan State defensive lineman, and he also added 1.5 sacks.
At the end of the 2023 season, Harmon announced he was entering the transfer portal, eventually signing to play at Oregon.
