Garrett Nussmeier was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana and attended Edward S. Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. Nussmeier was a four-star pro-style quarterback who threw for 8,160 yards and 83 touchdowns, with only 20 interceptions. His dad Doug Nussmeier was drafted in the fourth round by the New Orleans Saints in the 1994 draft and is now the quarterbacks coach for the Dallas Cowboys.
Nussmeier selected LSU over offers from Texas, Texas A&M, Miami, Georgia, Baylor, and North Carolina and was the backup quarterback for the Tigers as a true freshman. He appeared in four games and threw for 329 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He was granted a redshirt after the season.
In 2022, he appeared in seven games as a backup and passed for 800 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions.
As a redshirt sophomore in 2023, he appeared in seven games with one start completing 61.5% of his passes for 591 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. He comes into the 2024 season as the starting quarterback for the Tigers.
