Jackson Smith was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and played ice hockey for Edge School Prep U15, U16 and U18 teams between the 21-22 and 22-23 seasons. Between the three teams, Smith played in 52 games and collected 22 goals and 28 assists for 50 points.
After being drafted second overall in the 2022 WHL Draft by the Tri-City Americans, Smith played in six games and tallied two assists. The 2023-2024 season was Smith's first full sesaon in the WHL and he finished the season with eight goals and 21 assists in 62 games for the Americans.
Smith got to play internationally for the first time during the 2023-224 season, playing for Team Canada Red U17. In seven games in the WHC-17 tournament, Smith tallied two assists and two penalty minutes.
