Barrett Carter had an amazing high school career that saw him play both linebacker and running back at North Gwinnett High School in Georgia. He finished his career with 162 tackles of which 116 were solos, and 18 sacks. During his senior season he ran for 197 yards on 17 carries, with 8 tackles, 3 sacks and a fumble recovery during a state playoff game. He was selected to play in the All-American Bowl and chose Clemson on May 19, 2020. He was a five-star rated athlete and the #17 overall player by 247Sports.
His freshman season of 2021 saw Carter start one game and play 12 games total. He finished the season with 26 tackles, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery he returned for a 3-yard touchdown.
During 2022 Carter started in all 13 games and had a stellar season which ended with him being named first-team All-ACC. His 77 tackles were tied for the third on the team and he also added 5.5 sacks, 8-pass breakups, 2 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles. He entered the 2023 season as a Draft Nation preseason 2nd team All-American. In 12 games he collected 62 tackles, 9.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks and 1 interception.
