Deontae Lawson attended Mobile Christian School in Alabama, where he was a star linebacker for the football team. He was named first team all-state as a junior after recording 101 solo tackles and 33 assists during the season. As a senior, he was selected to the All-American Bowl roster and was rated the No. 2 prospect in Alabama. Lawson was a unanimous four-star prospect who elected to stay home and play for the University of Alabama.
In year one, Lawson provided depth in the Tide's linebacking corps, working in four games and received a redshirt at season's end. In 2022, he earned significant minutes on special teams while growing his role on defense as the season wore on, seeing time in 11 games with four starts and recording 51 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and four pass breakups. The redshirt sophomore took control of the starting middle linebacker position in 2023, starting 11 games and registering 67 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks, and four pass breakups. In 2024, Lawson started the first 11 games before being injured for the season against Oklahoma. Although he missed the last game, he still was tied for ninth in the SEC with 76 tackles, two sacks, one interception and one forced fumble before his exit.
